Marvel Comics

Marvel is the name of a comic book publisher, known for its superhero titles. The company was founded in 1939 as Timely Publications and changed its name to Marvel Comics in 1961. Marvel is one of the “big two” comic book publishers, along with DC Comics. In 1968, Goodman sold Marvel to a group of investors led by Stanley Lieber (later known as Stan Lee). Lee oversaw the expansion of the Marvel Universe with new characters and storylines.

The first comic book he published was Marvel Mystery Comics in 1939, which featured the first appearance of the character Namor the Sub-Mariner. Goodman continued to publish comics through the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. In 1961, he changed the name of his company from Timely Publications to Marvel Comics. The Silver Age of Comic Books began in the early 1960s, and Marvel was at the forefront with characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and the X-Men. In 1968, Goodman sold Marvel to a group of investors led by Stanley Lieber (later known as Stan Lee). Lee oversaw the expansion of the Marvel Universe with new characters and storylines. The Bronze Age of Comic Books began in the 1970s, and Marvel continued to be successful with titles like The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, and X-Men. In the 1980s, Marvel was bought by New World Entertainment, and in the 1990s, it was bought by Toy Biz. In 2009, Marvel was bought by The Walt Disney Company.
